Picture Books and Read Alouds : An Overview for Effective Instruction

This online module will give classroom teachers an overview of the art and science of read-alouds, with specific emphasis on picture books and their role in a comprehensive literacy program. Participants will learn the value of read-alouds, effective read-aloud techniques to support all learners, how to choose the right book for a read-aloud, and how read-alouds can effectively develop vocabulary, fluency & comprehension. This module is current and aligned to the Common Core Standards framework. Lessons incorporate 21st century skills and instructional practices through an ICT (Information, Communication, Technology) literacy lens and explores the role of digital literacy in 21st century education.
Participants need to be able to send and receive email with and without attachments, use a word processing program such as Microsoft Word, and access and navigate the Internet, including viewing video clips from YouTube and other video streaming websites. Participants will use Blackboard to access course content and linked readings, to participate and access module content from web-based platforms. Participants will need to have access to the use of digital tools such as a digital camera with video, a Flip video camera and/or a digital recording device, either audio and/or video.
Registrations must be made before the end of the month; participants will begin on the 6th of the next month. For example: to begin a module in May, a registration must be in before April 30.
Note: On the 6th registrants should look for an email which will include login instructions and a link to the online classroom, Blackboard.
If the 6th falls on a weekend or holiday, registrants will receive login information on the following business day.
